10 Tips to Getting More Comments
Comments are incredibly valuable to your blogging experience, and if you make money from your site, comments are important to your wallet too. There are lots of things you can do to get more comments on your blog, and these are just ten of them.
1.) Have a guest post. You don’t want just any guest post. Solicit guest posts from popular, well-connected writers. It is all the better when they have a big social network. The guest poster’s fans will be drawn in and will leave comments.
2.) Get on your soap box about something you believe in. If you feel strongly about something, let your opinion out, and watch the comments roll in. It doesn’t matter if you rail about politics, religion, your condo association fees… tell the world how you feel. Don’t expect all the resulting comments to be supportive and positive, however.
3.) Ask for comments. You should always ask your visitors to leave comments, but ask other folks too. Your Facebook friends, colleagues, family members and others that know you and care about you will probably leave a comment if you ask them really nicely.
4.) Don’t ditch all the spam. If you are just looking for comment count, you could leave in spam comments to sites that you like or ones that look like a real comment. You could even use a plugin that gathers spam.
5.) Have a contest. Your prize could be super small, like a $5 gift card or a piece of schwag, and to win the prize, all visitors have to do is leave a small simple comment on a particular post.
6.) Trade comments. You are definitely not the only blogger in the world looking for comments. Find a blogger in your niche and reach out; offer to comment on his or her blog if they comment on yours.
7.) Write about blogging. This should be a useful, quality post that other folks in the blogging community will be thankful for. Other bloggers know that the proper way to show appreciation is to leave a comment on your blog. Sure, they probably are going to leave a link to their blog as well, but isn’t that what it is all about.
8.) Make an announcement. Big news gets big feedback. If there is a marriage, divorce, graduation, birth, birthday, anniversary, promotion or anything of the sort, blog about it. Then wait for the condolences, congratulations or other wishes to start rolling in.
9.) Ask for help. Usually people think the blogger is the expert, but if you are looking to them for their knowledge, they will probably champ at the bit to show their stuff. Ask about how to bake better cakes, cure your cold or anything else that many folks will be able to help you with.
10.) Get dirty. Sling some mud because people love to read this sort of drama. Attack people and companies you disagree with and be sure to use some profanity. These will get people’s attention, and they will comment, but don’t expect them not to roll up their sleeves and get into the mud too.
This article is written by Frank who likes web-site promotion, android applications, easiest website builder and networking.

Hello Frank,
Though I agree with some points; I disagree too. Sorry to say this, but I ain’t using profanity anytime on my blog. Not that I want to have the “good girl” image; but profanity always doesn’t go well with the readers. They might find that objectionable. I agree with disagreeing with an idea, or having your own opinion about it; maybe even discussing an event that might cause some stir; but definitely that is just a way to bring in the comments or ideas; but in no way would disrespect go well with the readers. Until the act or issue you are are discussing is disrespectful, but then again there is a way to convey the message I feel.
Secondly, I don’t agree with trading comments. Initially when I began blogging, there was too much of the “I comment on your blog, you comment on mine” discussions. But that just was very terrible for me to deal with. Most of the time I ended on blogs I didn’t like and had no interest in the kind of content discussed there. So I decided to drop out. I felt that someone should read my blog only if they want to, not because I am going and commenting on their blog. Yes, if I see a reader coming by and dropping in a nice comment, I will go back and check out their blog. Even if the niche is same, sometimes comment exchange is totally out of hand.
About spam; I wouldn’t agree again; I feel once we allow spam, we make way for them. We should be stopping them, getting it over with. Though that seems like tough, but everyone can make an attempt to cut down or delete comments that are spam.
More than comment count; I feel we should be focusing on quality discussions. Though a large number of comments, does swell the ego and makes blogging much more fun; there are some things I am just not ready to do.
I love the point about contest. Believe me, after two contest, I can imagine the traffic and the comment diverted to a blog; it does give the required boost to quite an extent!
About asking for comments; a fellow blogger taught me that if I end my posts with questions, it makes it easier for the readers to hold on and respond. That has worked for me to quite an extent!
Thanks for this Frank! It was interesting
Have a lovely day!

Good points, and Hajra made a couple of worthy counter points as well. One of these days I will release the spam on my posts; the numbers would go way up……..:).

Hajra created this awesome post: Will they call you over for a Bloggers Party?
By far the best advice I ever got about traffic is to network with other bloggers. If you write great content and no one knows who you are, it won’t matter. Networking with other bloggers, joining a tribe and collaborating with other bloggers you trust will help you get tons of comments on your blog.
You want to be genuine and honest about your approach when networking with others and learn from them. I have learned a ton from people I have met and I couldn’t be more grateful for the information they have passed on to me. You have to figure out what works best for you and go with it. Also have a call to action with every post and comment on other blogs.
Sonia created this awesome post: Is Pinterest for You?
Sonia,
Yes, I would say the best thing to do is network. The key is trust. Both parties have to trust that the other will be there for them. I have heard of stories when bloggers network and the relationship falls apart because one doesn’t follow through or just stops collaborating once he/she got what they needed. It is too bad. But we take our chances.
You have amazing advice here. Thank you for sharing it. I especially like the genuine and honest advice. So true!

Hi Allie,
I just did a contest and an announcement recently and you are absolutely correct. Those posts have been some of the most commented posts in the last few weeks.
I love your comment about spam, it would be awesome to see my favorite bloggers start allowing spam in the comments. Some of my spam is completely hilarious. I have lately not been stressed over getting tons of comments since they don’t really translate into anything revenue producing.
I like comments more for building those relationships.

The best advice I ever got was to have a blogging buddy. We agreed to comment on each other’s post no matter what. It made a huge difference not only because it started people off commenting but also because after slogging myself half to death to write something, knowing that I would get at least one comment kept me going.
Now I have two new blogs I am looking for buddies again – Allie you’re doing a great job on http://clutter365.com Thank you! I totally appreciate it. I’m looking for someone in the paleo space to help me on http://paleononpaleo.com if anyone is interested.

Is controversy good or bad for a post? I mean the trick is to have opposing views but not be disrespectful?
Hajra created this awesome post: Will they call you over for a Bloggers Party?
I’m not sure about the spam thing either. I think honestly people put too much emphasis on getting comments. But if i were to want to seek out comments i think the first thing would do would be to build my tribe of 5 or 10 people whom you comment on regularly. Blogs i enjoy reading and before you know it those people usually come by and comment on your blog. OR not. But it’s all good fun and you build commeraderay.

The commenting groups work. I was in one last year but it was too massive I couldn’t keep up. But the social proof I received from it was phenomenal.
~Allie
Allie created this awesome post: Blogging Success: Failure Is Success
Yes, it is very important to have comments in our blogs. It is like having the recognition by your visitors. Just tweet or share an article we like, is not a big deal! I am a newbie blogger and comments encourage me to keep on working with passion!

But respond to the coming comments is important too. People land to our blogs, leave comments and we are supposed to reply. They feel that someone is behind that website and it seems “live”.
Interesting article Allie thank you
Elena Anne created this awesome post: Sick Day: When to Put Your Health Before The Gym
Elena,
Here I am weeks later replying. That is horrible because I agree with you. The bloggers should reply to at least the intelligent comments. And honestly, in the beginning, a new blogger maybe should reply to all. This gives great social proof, meaning others will think you are popular because you have more comments.
I like how you say the blog seems “live”. That is so true. it should feel that way. It encourages people to come back because they feel part of a community.
Thanks.
~Allie
Allie created this awesome post: Blogging Success: Failure Is Success
I completely agree with most of these and especially try to put into practice numbers 5, 6, and 8. However, number 4 doesn’t really count as spam is just that – spam. It is not a comment that counts for anything and if you are presenting that to PR, it shows a lack of pride in your work and may cause some to view you as lazy for not better overseeing your site. Number 10 is only applicable if that’s the type of reputation you want to have for yourself/your company. As mentioned by others, the best way to build up your readership in addition to your comments is to network and reply.

Spam is called spam for a reason. We don’t want it.
I was hesitant to have a guest poster that had opposing views to mine but I like to hear them and see how people react. So far, my readers don’t like spam and mud slinging. And neither do I .
You’re right the best way to build your readership and community at your blog is to network and reply. Get a conversation going.
~Allie

We should be taking commenting to the next level – conversations!
Hajra created this awesome post: Will they call you over for a Bloggers Party?
Sometimes you wonder where are the people. When I built a blog, no one ever went on it let alone people commenting on it. You have start a conversation to get people going. Right said, be controversial, people can’t wait to leave messages then.

Controversial is good but I don’t like when people bash or speak badly about others. That is where I draw the line.

I definitely know the feeling, like Shalu Sharma, of “Where is everyone?” – It’s just a very small percentage of readers who leave a comment. I don’t know why. I like your suggestions, and I think guest posts are so incredibly valuable in a million ways – They also can potentially provide a very valuable back link too. I wish I was better at cultivating guest bloggers for my site. I like all your suggestions -except “get dirty” – That just isn’t my style. Nice list Allie!
Melody created this awesome post: Contest: Find chalkboard art drawn by Starbucks baristas (you don’t have to be an artist to enter)
Melody,
I wonder too. If I like a post I will comment. If I don’t like a post, I guess I just leave. Sometimes I just don’t feel like giving feedback or I was just at a site for information then I leave. But, honestly, if I come to a blog that is new to me and there are a lot of comments I am inclined to leave one also. How funny us humans are for social proof. It’s like if there is a line, it must be a good burger technique.
Yes, get dirty is not my idea. But I thought I would give a guest blogger some say.

Great article!
Getting comments shouldn’t be hard as long as your content is worthy to be read!
Comments also show your real traffic that is interested in what you wrote.
About getting dirty, you’ll have to see how your audience reacts to that. In some cases, this works. But many tiems people get it all wrong in placing them int he right place. It ain’t rocket science, but be careful with it.
Forget spam too. They don’t really give you a good shot anyways. Just filling
