Free is always awesome but it can come with a price: frustration from feeling you can do nothing to solve the problems you are having. I’m quickly learning a valuable lesson: Facebook is cool and such an amazing tool for marketing a business or blog but you always need to be sure to remember your site is your main hub.

And, yes, I know I broke my Twitter rule with my super long title.

I think too many people think Facebook is the end all – be all. (you don’t see many postings anymore with the changes and if you want your page to be seen you must pay for promoted posts, etc) You cannot put all your social media eggs in one basket. What if the site is down? I can quickly go to Twitter and connect there or G+, Pinterest, etc. Of course building up an email list is another wonderful option. And your own self-hosted blog. I love the 24/7 support I get from Hostgator, I hear a lot of good things on BlueHost too. Great points Allie!

Any type of email list is WAY better than depending on any type of social media. Mari Smith agrees with Lisa (comment above). She said too many folks expect Facebook to work like an ATM machine where you comment and pull money out.

Hi Allie,
Great points you’ve put up Allie. Okay, it’s great to have those fan pages and to interact with your followers, but – there’s always that big but, you are so right, our blogs are our real homes online.
Thanks Allie. Have a great Christmas and New Year with your family.
Take Care

You still need a blog or some kind of site to do business online. Still need a domain name and a hosting to get started. Thanks for pointing out to the guide to starting a blog.

FB is quickly becoming the bane of my blogging existence. It is amazing the difference between our FB stats from this summer and now. And not in a good way. And you are right, it is free, but it still annoys me!

I’ve been meaning to write a post about the topic of why you should be more interested in having people come to your blog then getting them to hang out with you on Facebook. You are so right Allie, your blog is the only real estate you personally own online.
I’ve also had issues with Facebook not loading my stuff. One day it would load my profile page but not stuff on my fan page. Go figure!!! It’s just not dependable and like you said, it’s free.
I appreciate your rant and will probably be having one of my own next year.
Thank you for letting us share out links on your page Allie, that’s very thoughtful of you and oh so brave.
Oh and I agree, Bluehost is the best hosting service online. The best! Love them.
Merry Christmas Allie!
