TTMDBP: Blog Domain Name and Site Setup

MDBP Domain NameMDBP How To Find a Great Domain Name and Set it up in 15 Minutes

What I’ve Done:

I remember picking my domain name.  I wanted it to reflect who I was but not have my name.  I wanted it to show what my blog was going to be about without being too blatantly in your face about it.  I tend to “ramble” about the Internet and I was an aspiring “work at home mom”.  So I came up with Ramblings of a WAHM.  My domain name was born.

I soon realized it was sort of a bad choice.

Don’t use acronyms because not everyone knows and recognizes them.  But I figured if you were a mom looking to work from home you would know this acronym. It is long.  It has 19 letters.  That is not horrible but Corbett says in his latest MDBP to stick to about 12.  Basically,

Start Your WAHM Blog Step by Step Blogging for WAHMs Welcome new blogger!

Blogging is the most popular way to get your content for your business or personal ideas out to the general masses on the internet.

But what is a blog? It started as a “weblog” back in the old days, the 90′s!  That breaks down to “web” and “log”.  A log or journal on the web.  Meaning it is in chronological order.  That’s simple.  As if weblog isn’t short enough, it needed to be shortened to “blog”.  And there we are, the easiest, fastest, most economic way to get your point across on the web.

When I started blogging I wish someone would have just given me a list and said start here.  Either I couldn’t find that information or it just doesn’t exist. Who knows.  I am here to let you know what steps I took and the order in which I did them

My Big Domain Hosting Secret

Finding a host for your domain can be stressful.

Bloggers don’t need more stress.  They already have to worry about writing great content, SEO, their reputation, Tweeting, Facebooking, Google rank, Alexa Rank, commenting, forums…you get the picture.  You want a company you can rely on so the behind the scenes stuff looks flawless.  And you never need to worry your site is down.

I’ll let you in on a little secret.  I cheated, this time.  I don’t have time to research bandwidth, XML, XHTML, SSL, email accounts, uptime or anything else that your host should cover you for. Below is my secret way of choosing a host.  You’ll be so surprised to find out.

I know little about domain hosting and definitely not enough to give you advice; I know I would steer you in the wrong direction.    My way of picking a host for my domain was to look at the major blog players in my industry and go with the most popular host I found. The end.

Starting Your Blog: The Basic Necessities

Starting Your Blog: Basic Necessities

Blogging can be very rewarding on a personal and/or professional level.  With hard work, determination and know how a person can be a great blogger.

Before I even started blogging I took a lot of notes in a very simple notebook. (I still do.)  My notes for my blog start August 17, 2010.  I put a title at the top, “About Me”.   At this point I knew I wanted to blog but needed to know what I would blog about. I was brainstorming about my life and likes.  I had been researching how to make money online and wanted in on the action.  That was it!  I would write about my life as a mom earning money online. Long story short, Ramblings of a WAHM began.

I want to walk you through my process of starting a WordPress blog with its own domain name on a shared host.
